Ever wondered why we all suddenly turn into green-clad leprechauns on March 17th? Or how Saint Patrick’s Day became synonymous with shamrocks, parades, and a lot of Guinness?
Saint Patrick’s Day is one of those global celebrations where the revelry takes center stage, but behind all the green and glitter, there’s a history that’s as rich as a pint of stout. Here is a brief history on how this day of festivities went from a saint’s solemn feast to the global party we know and love today!
It begins with the life of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Born as Maewyn Succat in Roman Britain in the late 4th or early 5th century, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders at age 16 and enslaved in Ireland. After escaping years later, he became a Christian missionary, credited with spreading Christianity throughout Ireland. Over time, Maewyn became known as Patrick, eventually earning the title of Saint Patrick.
Originally a religious feast day, Saint Patrick’s Day has evolved into a worldwide celebration of Irish culture. Green attire, shamrocks, and parades are now common traditions, inspired by the legend of Saint Patrick using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Interestingly, the first Saint Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York City in 1762—well before Ireland hosted its own parade! Today, cities around the world celebrate with festivals, food, music, and even rivers dyed green like the Chicago River.
Though deeply rooted in Irish heritage, Saint Patrick’s Day is now a global celebration of luck, laughter, and all things Irish—and what better way to mark the occasion than with delicious food? In honor of this widely celebrated holiday, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite Saint Patrick’s Day plank recipes to put a smoky twist on some classic dishes.
